The New Auburn School District uses Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) which is an evidence-based framework for improving and integrating all of the data, systems, and practices affecting student outcomes every day. It is a way to support everyone to create the kind of school where all students are successful. PBIS is a commitment to addressing student behavior through systems change. When it’s implemented well, students achieve improved social and academic outcomes, exclusionary discipline practices are reduced, and staff feel more effective. Staff set goals and work together with students and families to see them through.
In the New Auburn School District, each of the three schools (elementary, middle school, and high school) have a PBIS team of teachers who work with that particular population of students. Teams meet on a regular basis to review and discuss expectations, look at data, set goals, and organize celebrations. A student is given a "Trojan Ticket" when expectations are met which positively reinforces the behavior. When expectations are not met, the expected behavior is retaught. Depending on the behavior, a minor or major may be given and parents/guardians are notified*. Minors and majors are entered as data and used to track behaviors and set new goals. It is our hope that we can work together with students and families to best help the student meet expectations and be successful in school.
*If you would like to receive automatic notification when your child receives a minor or major, please contact the school.
PBIS Procedures
We, as a school community, want our children to:
-
Be Respectful
-
Be Responsible
-
Be Productive
Throughout the year we implement procedures for teaching and celebrating these expectations school wide. This will encompass:
- Tracking of behavior data within each of the three schools
- School wide instruction of expected behaviors
- Immediate reinforcement for positive behaviors
- School wide celebrations acknowledging accomplishments
