General Music runs for students in Kindergarten through 6th grade. In these classes, students learn the fundamentals of music and musicianship through song, solfege, rhythms, movement, and the playing of classroom instruments (including recorder and ukulele). In the upper elementary grades, they are introduced to composers and begin to learn about music history and the different genres. All elementary students have the opportunity to perform for the community at our winter and spring concerts.

Elements of choral singing are woven into the fabric of General Music, but the real deal begins in 7th grade when students can choose to be a part of Choir as well as Band. Choral students from 7th through 12th grade focus specifically on developing their voices, learning to sing as a group as well as individually, and continue to develop their personal repertoire and overall musicianship. Score study, vocal technique training, and the ensemble rehearsal are central to these classes. Every year in March, choir students have opportunity to be a part of Solo & Ensemble, which then increases the likelihood of their selection to participate in other yearly events like the Lakeland Conference Honors Choir and the State Honors Project. Once choral students reach the high school level, they have travel opportunities with the combined Music Department, including our big out-of-state trip every two years. Previous Trips: Universal Studios, Chicago and Branson!

Beginning in 5th grade, students have the opportunity to join band. With 5th and 6th graders, they are working hard to learn an instrument of their choice; have lessons on their instruments; and perform in concerts. Once in 7th grade, students join the 8th - 12th graders at pep bands, marching in Jamboree Days, and have opportunities of playing in Honors Band through the Lakeland Music Conference, and UWEC. Each year in March, Solo & Ensemble events take place, and students are strongly encouraged to compete and participate. Each Spring, a school in the Lakeland Music Conference hosts Pep Band Play Offs. This is an event where the bands can compete and be rated on their performances. In March 2018, the Pep Band took 2nd Place overall, and our percussion took home the trophy as the Best Percussion Section. 9th - 12th grade students have the opportunity to travel every two years. So far, trips have included Branson, Chicago, and Universal Studios in Florida!
